What is Pay-Per-Click (PPC)?

PPC stands for Pay-Per-Click. It is also reffered to as CPC - Cost-Per-Click advertising. PPC is a medium of advertising on the Search Engines where the advertiser is charged for every click on his or her ad. The ads are displayed on the right hand side of the Search Engine Result Pages (SERP) under the Sponsord Results column. Of late, more and more results are displayed on top of the organic results in numbers ranging from 1 to 3 ads.

Placement of the ads is determined on an auction basis - by bids, factoring in the quality variable of the ad (called Quality Score by Google and Quality index by Yahoo!). The three biggest networks are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Marketing Solutions, and Microsoft AdCenter.

Within those three PPC systems, we can identif two separate networks - the Search Network and the Content Network. Search Network are the ads that are displayed on the results pages of the search engines, including the web, image, and maps/locals searches. The Content Network is a network of ads displayed on websites that chose to participate in a given system (such as Google AdSense). Ads are displayed based on the content of each website and algorithm decideds what ads to post on what website.
